Nolo:
Nolo is an icelandic duo of Ívar Björnsson and Jón Lorange. They started making music undir the Nolo name in the summer of 2009. Their first release was an EP on the underground label Brak Records, the album No-Lo-Fi. It was released in january 2010 and got them an award (Kraumur music award) and they received loads of good reviews. It is now sold out. Around that time they signed a deal with Kimi Records and started making the album Nology, which has just been released in Iceland.
Sudden Weather Change:
Sudden Weather Change are five artists/art students from Iceland, whose sound is best described as loud, dark and fierce. They embrace the 90s alt-rock aesthetic, turn up their guitars and show no mercy when it comes to feedback.
Their most recent output might bring to mind current bands like Women and Deerhunter. The lyrics are schizophrenic, cryptic and often found in the most random of places to create eccentric lyrical collages. However, their attitude on stage might bring to mind political riots in 70′s Paris or the annual Running of the Bulls in Pamplona.
After releasing an EP recorded in the basement of their local swimming pool in 2006, Sudden Weather Change have gathered huge praise from the Icelandic press along a with fiercely loyal fan base. Any foreign writers lucky enough to have witnessed the band performing have without fail been massively impressed if their writes-ups are anything to go by.
In April 2009 they released their first full-length album Stop! Handgrenade In The Name of Crib Death ‘nderstand? with Kimi Records in Iceland who went on to release the album in the rest of the world in October of the same year.
In 2010 Sudden Weather Change were awarded an Icelandic Music Award for best new act, released a 7″/mp3 single with Kimi Records dubbed “The Whaler”, and recorded a 4 track EP with producer/sounic artist Ben Frost. Along with frost Sudden teamed with old friends, electronic musicians/composers Þobbi and Doddi. This hotly anticipated EP, “Varrior” will be released in mid-october digitally and as a 10″ vinyl deluxe package in December.
Náttffari:
Náttfari was formed in 2000 and became part of the Icelandic alternative rock scene at the turn of the century. The band played many live shows in that period, they supported Trans Am, Low and Dianogah, and performed at the Iceland Airwaves in 2001 and 2002, receiveing good reviews. Their music can be described as dreamy and atmospheric, with dynamic and vivid drums and
elements from different directions such as rock, electronica, ambient, jazz and classical music.Having never finished an LP and following a hiatus from 2002 the band reunited in 2010 to play Iceland Airwaves. The gig was selected as one of the 15 best acts on Airwaves that year by the Reykjavik Grapevine magazine. Later that year the band entered the studio to record a full length album. The album will be released in 2011 on Kimi records.

SUDDEN WEATHER CHANGE: ROCKING OUT
Sunday night, especially early Sunday night, is rarely a particularly raucous time-slot for a festival performance. Everyone is hung over and digesting the creative juices of the last few days, so usually only a diligent few make it to these gigs. The Sudden Weather Change gig at NASA proved no exception, with the audience being, once again, rather thin on the ground. This didn’t really matter though, as these boys know how to rock things, so even though there weren’t many present, those who had made it were well entertained.
The group is a five man band made up of artists/art students, and certainly their sound and onstage presence could be described as somewhat arty. Fortunately, they don’t go in for OTT theatrics, and just rocking out with some distortion here and some feedback there which gives the impression of an aim for difference. They seem to break the mould without being too in your face with it, and this is cool.
Their sound is kind of old and this is somehow appealing, with moments in the gig hearkening back to the good old days of guitars and stuff, then other moments bringing in the joys of newfangled technology to warp things up a bit. A nice combo of old and new.
In all it was a good gig. Probably not the music for a cosy evening at home with your woolly socks on, but definitely right for warming up for the mighty Deerhunter, and they even managed to wrangle a few head bobs out of the hungover audience. Nice job.

Let me introduce you Sudden Weather Change and their new record. This record wont make the band, or any member of the band famous. Its not going to make anyone rich or for that matter return any profit for anyone, either. The album you hold in your hand is one of the few, and it probably wont appear in physical form outside of the bands originating home, Iceland.
There really aren’t any “number 1´s” on the album and I predict it will get little, if any radio-play, and if I know the relationship between the band and media, it wont get much coverage. I´m sad to be the one telling you this, but you are not reading this text at your home, next to a christmas tree, because the album arrived in a limbo-esque place between christmas and christmas.
To make hits, get advertised or being played on the radio was never this records goals, or even destiny for that matter. It is a great record, I can tell you because I’ve heard it. I am still deeply convinced about all these negative things I´ve said about it before – despite all that, the album is fantastic. Despite other things, like the fact that Sudden Weather Change will never even fill up Iceland´s best concert hall, Laugardalshöll, they’re awareness of it and ambition has never been more than now.
All of the members of the group are artists. They’ve either graduated as such, or found themselves studying an art form or another. The creation and process behind is what Varrior is about – the curiosity to try new things and pushing the limits of songwriting and personal soundscape is more what the record is about. Lately, the members of the band have found themselves trying new things and opening they´re arms to collaborations and new ideas. Both to conquer they´re previous activities as well as gaining experience from it. The Saan Rail is a song they wrote with one of Icelands brightest new bands, Nolo, and sometime in the future, the band will release a split with their friends, Reykjavík! where the bands make cover songs of each other. An example of the charity or givingness Sudden Weather Change bring with them is found at the Iceland Airwaves festival in 2010; instead of playing the old set for people who already know the band all too well, they took a certain challenge and made they´re own versions of 6 songs by local legends Ghostigital, at an evening they curated in a nice old theatre venue. As I said before, Sudden Weather Change do everything to gain new experiences as a group.
With this record, the band decided to collect some of Icelands most promising and ambitious young artists to make the album happen. They took in two modern composers who had recently graduated from the Icelandic Art Acadamy´s music department, Þorbjörn G. Kolbrúnarsson (Thobbi) and Þórður Hermansson (Doddi). Together they helped composing and arranging songs with the band as well as taking theyre sound to a new level. That level was then pushed to its outer limits when sound artist Ben Frost took the job of recording the outcome. Everyone was on the same level, and the collaboration was great, without further words describing it.
One of the new elements the band brings in with this record, along with making better songs and having a more personal sound, are the lyrics. It is safe to say that the lyrics are more carefully crafted than before, they do not have any resemblance to found words on the internet or television programs, and the sentence “great selection of words”, does not count in this case.
There is always a certain joy among members of the band, but the pressure is not far from it. Being chosen the most promising band at 2009´s Icelandic music awards as well as in Morgunblaðið was most certainly an honor, but the pressure was on the always uprising name and they knew they had to make something good out of it. This was in 2009, right after the debut LP “Stop! Handgrenade in the name of crib death, ´nderstand?” was released. After they´re accomplishments earlier that year, the band could´nt seem to write a single note, even 8 months after the 13-track release. The reasons were simple; (1) despite success, the group didn´t want to enter a spiral of repetitiveness and (2) they knew they could do better than before.
When releasing an album like this one and continuing to make material of well crafted excellent is part of the bands standards to not disappoint. Furthermore, it is of the bands interest to feel more confident and secure in the studio space. Because, despite all awards and appreciation from previous works, the band never wants to hesitate or stop experimenting with new sounds and approaches without losing the bands high-quality mark. Forever pushing limits inside the band as well as the listeners.
However, being a band in Iceland is like having a job you pay for doing. There are almost no paychecks and the job seems to be some sort of luxury part-time job you pay yourself for. There are tons of concerts every month, week, days and bands rarely get paid, except the one or two beers you get if you´re in luck and the venue happens to include a bar. Just as natural as concerts come, you must have in mind that music-life has a way of taking a toll out of your wallet. Bandmembers spend they´re money on rent, amplifiers, strings, instruments, drumsticks, and everything necessary to continue on what they like best. The best thing about being in a creative commune, however, is creating something like Varrior. The final outcome, which is perfectly visible to you, is made by a group who like making music just as much as you like listening to it. It becomes a gift for two individuals, something you can give to make your heart and soul more physical, in a way.
The achieved goal of this record is to release something of fineness, something to keep next to the other records in shelves. This record is for everyone who wants something more physical from a hard working band, and therefore, become part of the band. I deeply hope this record helps you get more involved in the story and progress of the band Sudden Weather Change and hopefully it will become and belong to some specific time of your life, at least having a respectable place in your record collection.
This text was not written by a member of Sudden Weather Change, but an inseparable “sixth” member of the group who put together parts of conversations that went in and out of context. These mood-driven, half forgotten parts have later been used to create something more wholesome which is best described in a sort of puzzle.

This album came out the 19th of June 2010 by Kimi records, on this album you find two songs, The Thinliner and The Whaler. These two songs were made in the summer of 2009 just before we went on tour around Iceland which was called Sumargleðin (Summer Fun Tour). In that tour we played these songs a lot and in the autumn we were ready to record the songs. We went to the oldest studio in Iceland, it’s placed in Hafnarfjörður and is called Hljóðriti. Aron had been the sound engineer on the Sumergleðin tour and was interested in working with us and recording our songs, so he got the job.
After our first LP published in spring 2009 we were in a little crisis. We didn’t knew where we wanted to head with our music. So we decided to make many small projects instead of thinking to make another LP right away. We wanted to get some time to develop our music more and making many small projects with new people seemed to be the right way for us. We all agreed that we lacked experience in the studio. We had a lot of experience in performing on stage, but very little experience working in studio. That’s why our “7 was recorded in Hljóðriti. In The Beginning the plan was to connect theses two songs so they would sound like one long song. So we recorded these songs together in one long session, but in the mixing process we found out that it was not working.
The artwork on the cover was a piece of art made by our friend Anna Hrund Másdóttir. Anna Hrund graduated with Dagur and Loji from Iceland Academy of the Arts 2010. Bergur The bass player made the fonts and our good friend Svavar Pétur did the layout.

Stop! Handgrenade in the name of cribdeath ‘nderstand was our first
full length album. It was released by Kimi Records in April of 2009.
The album was recorded in Borgafjörður, the Iceland Academy of the
Arts in august 2008 and additional recordings were done at Seljabraut
32 in febuary of 2009. The Album was recordd by Friðrik Helgason.The album draws from pretty much the entire bands lifespan up until
its recording. Some of the tracks are from 2006 whilst others were
only just being finished and some had the final touches done during
the recording. The title of the album traces its roots to an English
class where the we were mulling over names for the album. We thought
it was such a funny and absurd title we just had to use it.In the summer of 2008 we had a bunch of songs ready and were rearing
to get down to recording. All we needed was to find a place to record
and find someone to help us do it. That’s when we met Friðik. We first
met Friðrik at the all tomorrows parties festival. We had him in mind
for a while though but none of us really knew him that well. Once we
had a chance to get to know him the rest kind of fell into place very
easily. Friðrik was finishing his soundengineer’s degree and needed a
project to do as his final piece for school. This was to be our first
full length album and Friðriks first proper recording session as an
engineer and producer.We rented a house in Borgarfjörður called Trönur, it’s the oldest
house in Borgarfjörður. The goal was to produce a raw, lively and
powerful album. So we recorded most the album live.The album starts with natural ambient sounds. They were recorded with
a microphone that was placed on the outside of the house. With it we
were going to capture the rock ambience that oozed out of the house.
During all this some horseriders came up to the house with they’re
dogs and started chatting.We recorded their conversation. You can hear in the beginning and the
end of the album. We thought these sounds gave the album an
interesting tone. Whilst recording the album all these little
unexpected things were very interesting.That’s why we held a party for our closest friends on last day of
recording. We filled the fridge with beer and let destiny take its
course. In the midst of the party we actually recorded a song called
Ampeg aptly named after Bergurs faithful bass amp. In the same party
we recorded the backing vocals for some of the songs mainly Team
Explosion dolphin.Our objective with Stop! handgreande in the name of crib death
‘understand was to make a raw and powerful album that captured our
mood. A bit like inviting a stranger to a party.

This Album was recorded at the Iceland Airwaves Festival in Tjarnabíó 2010 by Curver. Curver did also the mastering in his apartment i New York in December 2010.
Few weeks Before Iceland Airwaves 2010 the guys in Ghostigital asked us if we wanted to cover couple of their songs on a special gig over the festival. Ghostigital plays an aggresive music with lot of electronic beats and sounds and on top of that the voice of Einar Örn floats and creates even more chaos.
This type of music which they play are’nt close to what we in Sudden Weather Change are playing or thinking of when we are playing our music. This Challenge was actually perfect for our ideas at that time. We had won this awards at Iceland music Awards as The Rookie of the year and we wanted to do as much as we could, do things that we had never done before, to develop our music more. Our music has always been very melodic so it was exiting for us to deal with abstract music, where the song structure was based on power and chaos. The practices were often intence and lots of time we were pissed to each other. It was very difficult to get the songs as we wanted them to sound. Everybody had their own ideas how the songs should sound, but after few weeks we found four results that we were happy with and played in Tjarnabíó at the Iceland Airwaves Festival. The Concerts went really well, we got our friends to join us to perform some of the songs, like Anton which played on trompet and Steinunn Harðadóttir which sang with us in two songs. The result from this concert can be found only on the web, but it was the noisemaster and the half of the duo in ghostigtal, Curver who recorded these songs live in Tjarnabíó. He also mastered and mixed the songs in his apartment in New York few weeks after the festival.

Sudden Weather Change and Nolo used 4 electric guitars, bass, drummkit, synthersizer and keybord while they were making the song.
The Saan Rail was recorded live in February 2010. Þorbjörn G. Kolbrúnarson recorded the song.
Early 2010 our record label decided to make an album which joined all the musicians and bands who are releasing at Kimi records on one album. This album was to be released early summer and the purpose was to give an example what was going on at the label.
When we were asked to join we wanted to make our summersong with young and upcomming band called Nolo. Nolo had then recently released an album named No-LoFi at Brak records. Brak records is an offspring from Kimi records mainly focusing on releasing albums that the big labels would never take a chance on releasing.
The idea of getting another band to join us composing a song was to get new blood, new fresh ideas and new emphasizes. This process expands our music, we learn from them and they learn fromus. And of course the most valueble thing is to be with friends in our rehersal space and do what we like most.
What happened was that more bands and musicians grabbed this idea and started to make songs together. For example Reykjavík and Mugison, Miri and Retro Stefson, Prinspóló and Skakkamanage, Hjálmar and an old fox from the icelandic music scene Helgi Björns.
Our song The Saan Rail is an eight minute long flow, which is a product of several jam sessions at our rehersal space. We wanted to show the identity of each band in the song. Nolo’s identity is their programmed computer beats and the noisy chourus guitar and the Sudden’s identity is their wall of sound driven by their three guitars and heavy bass.
The song is greatly influenced by the German krautrock like the bands Can, Kraftwerk, Cluster, Faust and Neu! At that time we were very influenced by the German krautrock.Sudden Weather Change EP (2006)

Are we friends or are we not? are one of the key questions that Sudden Weather Change raise in theyre first attempt at a studio recording. A young band, only a couple of months old, met in college and gained interest in one another about crafting some unique pieces of music. This short EP cries out and explores most feelings that come from five teenage boys – questioning friendship, relationships, time, personality, ego etc… At the time, 3 guitars in one band seemed like an awful lot of noise, but the harmony demonstrated on this recording exemplifies the truth behind looking beyond a certain horizon and shows just how early the band learned to work their songs like puzzles, constantly shifting pieces from one point to another until reaching this perfection. Even at the earliest shows I can remember, the crowd already included some important figures like members of Múm and Borko. For a young band with little experience this was a major success, as they never expected anyone to like this “new sound” they brought. A constant request for more live shows and other happenings drove the members of Sudden Weather Change to a swimming pool basement near the local college where they studied fine arts. Stefnir Gunnarsson and Þórður Hermannsson, life-long friends of the group, joined them in a messy place that used to be a social center for teenagers to spend time in that unique suburbia way, and teen spirit was indeed among them. The constant yelling and noising around made this record something for the boys to be proud of. After days of sleeping in the intoxicated air and waking up to do the next track, the job was done. Without each other and the support from all their followers and friends, this record would have never made it to a shop in the limited supply and hand-craft package it came in. The goal of releasing records is always to have the document of something existing and being able to see yourself progressing slowly but surely into new directions, constantly breaking barriers and looking through the ever-progressing nature of modern music. Ultimately, this record is about friendship and growing up, a subject equally known to the band to this day as it was then.

Sudden Weather Change : Although the members of Sudden Weather Change are apparently in their early 20s, they somehow manage to capture what it felt like to be an arty emo kid in high school in 1998. Remember, “emo” meant something very different ten years ago than it does today– Sudden Weather Change recall the prime of Sunny Day Real Estate or Cap’n Jazz. At NASA on Saturday, their shouted dual vocals, twisty-turny guitar lines and time signature changes inspired a fervent mosh pit. And I’m pretty sure the chorus to one song was “I HATE NICOLAS CAGE!!!”

When DiS stumbled into the back of a little coffee shop we expected to see some barely there folkster doing their best troubadour impression. Instead we got whooped upside the head by the lo-fi fizz of young post-hardcore loving boys Sudden Weather Change. Comparisons range from The Promise Ring and Braid (but the too-serious tone replaced by the exuberance of Burning Airlines, Les Savy Fav and, er, Less Than Jake – although praps only a line drawn cus of topless kids “pogoing”) to the unfurling art-rock of Wolf Parade and Sonic Youth. Well SY at those moments when they hit that apex point of life-affirmingness when your writhing is body possessed by the beat and those warm rushes of guitar fuzz gush through you and stroke your cortex (i.e. ‘Teenage Riot’). Add in a lyrics about hating Nicholas Cage, all sung by the three different kinds of geeky frontman and you have one of the most refreshing new bands around. This young band has been making a name around the city, and they took the stage with confidence, displaying guitar pyrotechnics and thunderous bass that called to mind the freedom and energy of Sonic Youth washed with the lo-fi ethics ofPavement. The performance utilized everything they had and delivered a healthy concoction of amp-hugging feedback and winding rock riffs. Sudden Weather Change managed to demonstrate to the fresh faced festival crowd that they are an impressive, outward thinking alt-rock band and a first class addition to Iceland’s music scene.

They embrace the 90s alt-rock aesthetic, turn up their guitars and show no mercy when it comes to feedback.
Their most recent output might bring to mind current bands like Women and Deerhunter. The lyrics are schizophrenic, cryptic and often found in the most random of places to create eccentric lyrical collages. However, their attitude on stage might bring to mind political riots in 70′s Paris or the annual Running of the Bulls in Pamplona.
After releasing an EP recorded in the basement of their local swimming pool in 2006, Sudden Weather Change have gathered huge praise from the Icelandic press along a with fiercely loyal fan base. Any foreign writers lucky enough to have witnessed the band performing have without fail been massively impressed if their writes-ups are anything to go by.
In April 2009 they released their first full-length album Stop! Handgrenade In The Name of Crib Death ‘nderstand? with Kimi Records in Iceland who went on to release the album in the rest of the world in October of the same year.
In 2010 Sudden Weather Change were awarded an Icelandic Music Award for best new act, released a 7″/mp3 single with Kimi Records dubbed “The Whaler”, and recorded a 4 track EP with producer/sounic artist Ben Frost. Along with frost Sudden teamed with old friends, electronic musicians/composers Þobbi and Doddi. This hotly anticipated EP, “Varrior” will be released in mid-october digitally and as a 10″ vinyl deluxe package in December.
